Board of Directors

The Board currently comprises an independent Non-Executive Chairman, three Executive Directors and two Non-Executive Directors.

A short biography of each Director is set out below.


Dr Bryan Dobson, Non-Executive Chairman

Bryan has over 33 years’ experience in the chemical industry with ICI plc and Croda International plc. Bryan started his career with ICI in 1978 and had a number of roles, both in the UK and overseas, including being European Regional Director of ICI Uniqema in the Netherlands in 2006. Following the acquisition of Uniqema by Croda International in September 2006, Bryan remained within the group and was President of Global Operations from 2008 until his retirement in 2011. He has held a broad range of senior business, technical and operational roles in the UK, the US, Belgium and the Netherlands. He is also currently a Non-Executive Director of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and of Revolymer plc. Bryan holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He joined Applied Graphene Materials in April 2012 as Chairman. Bryan is Chairman ofthe Group’s Nomination Committee and a member of the Audit and Remuneration Committees.

Dr Adrian Potts, Chief Executive Officer

Adrian has over 28 years’ experience in advanced composites materials product development, commercialisation and manufacturing leadership. He has worked at Applied Graphene Materials since January 2015 as Vice President Business Development, employed to promote the company’s presence and graphene applications technology in the North American high performance coatings and composites markets. Prior to this role, Adrian worked within Cytec Industrial Materials as Global Business Development Director, President of their Process Materials business in California and as President of Umeco Structural Materials Inc in Oklahoma. Before moving to the USA in 2002, he held roles at Advanced Composites Group Ltd covering General Business Management, Business Development, Research & Development Management activities and CML Group Ltd where he had technical responsibility for the establishment of their Composites Division. Adrian holds a PhD in thermoplastics composites materials and a BSc in Materials Technology. Adrian was appointed Chief Executive Officer in August 2018.

Gareth Jones, Chief Financial Officer

Gareth has 27 years’ experience in finance having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1993 with PWC. In recent years he has worked for the Emco Wheaton Division of private equity owned Gardner Denver Inc., the global provider of industrial equipment, technologies and services, where he joined as Finance Director in 2013. Prior to this he spent seven years as Finance Director of private equity backed start-up, Vireol Bio-Industries plc, which was seeking funding to design, construct and operate a bioethanol process facility. During his time with Vireol Bio-Industries, Gareth played a key role in securing equity investment and financing for the business.
Between 1995 and 2006 Gareth was employed by Syltone plc, in various roles, including Divisional Finance Director and Group Financial Controller. After its acquisition by Gardner Denver Inc. in 2004, Gareth became European Finance Director and then Divisional Finance Director of the Blower Division. In this capacity he was responsible for the day to day financial operations of the Group’s largest Division, operating across four continents, with revenues of circa. $480m. He graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1989 with a BEng. He was appointed Chief Financial Executive Officer of AGM in April 2017.



Professor Karl Coleman, Chief Scientific Officer

Karl is Head of Chemistry at Durham University, having previously been in the chemistry departments at the University of Oxford and the Universite de Strasbourg. Karl achieved a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Leicester in 1996 and is a Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist and fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. His work since 2000 has focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology, particularly the chemistry of carbon nanotubes. He has been funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Royal Society and he has authored or co-authored over 75 publications in peer reviewed journals which have accumulated over 2,500 citations. His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the international Royal Society of Chemistry Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2011 for his development of intellectual property around the production of graphene, and the Times Higher Education Research and Innovation Award 2012. He is the secretary of the Chemical Nanosciences and Nanotechnology subject group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Karl established the Company in 2010 and, whilst he is employed by Durham University, he is seconded to Applied Graphene Materials for part of this time.


Sean Christie, Non Executive Director

Sean is the former Group Finance Director of Croda International plc, which is a global manufacturer of speciality chemicals. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and holds other Non-Executive role with Accsys plc, Produce Investments plc and Turner & Townsend Limited. Prior to joining Croda in 2006, Sean was Group Finance Director of Northern Foods plc. He also served as a Non-Executive Director of KCOM Group plc until 2007 and of Cherry Valley Farms Limited until its sale in 2010. Sean is Chairman of the Group’s Audit and Remuneration Committees and a member of the Nomination Committee.


Mike Townend, Non Executive Director

Mike is Chief Investment Officer of IP Group, whom he joined in 2007  from Lehman Brothers where he was Managing Director of European equities and Head of equity sales to hedge funds. Mike is also responsible for the fund management and corporate finance activities of IP Group , through its regulated vehicle Top Technology Ventures. He has 18 years’ experience in all aspects of equity capital markets and the investment process and was also a key member of the senior relationship management programme at Lehman Brothers. Prior to this, he was an Executive Director at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette with responsibility for building the bank’s business with hedge funds and alternative Investors. Mike has sourced, co-led or led numerous private and public transactions. Mike represents the IP Group on the Boards of Modern Water plc and  Revolymer plc and is also a Non-Executive Director of Green Urban Transport Limited.
