WE ARE GRAPHENE.

We were delighted to celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 alongside fellow industry leaders in a female-led webinar hosted by The Graphene Council. AGM’s R&D Manager, Lynn Chikosha, represented the Company on a panel of graphene experts in order to discuss the challenges faced and the commercialisation opportunities being unlocked by advancements in graphene-based nanotechnology.

As the largest community in the world for graphene professionals, The Graphene Council facilitated the discussion to encourage collaboration and knowledge-sharing across companies at the forefront of the industry.

The panel came together from across the graphene value chain – from raw material production, to dispersion and end product manufacture.

While the commercial adoption of graphene is accelerating relatively quickly in applications as varied as Sensors, Textiles, Concrete, Coatings and Composite materials, the webinar discussion explored the regulatory environment and the importance of national standards to drive wider industry growth.

Confidence in the commercial use of graphene continues to increase through international approvals, including EU REACH registration and the recent development of The Graphene Council’s Material Classification Framework for graphene, which is now making progress towards becoming an ISO standard.

The panel agreed that ensuring quality control and reduced variability across graphenes in order to reliably scale up production, would further underpin the value that graphene can add over legacy materials.

As increased numbers of forward-thinking innovators incorporate graphene into their material systems and demonstrate its positive impact on both product performance and climate change, the wider industry will inevitably follow.

It was a pleasure to join the panel of leaders and experts in the graphene industry; discussing routes to commercialisation, the challenges we all face as well as the future of graphene. Hopefully, we were also able to positively influence women in science, engineering or technology who may be just starting out in their careers.

We are pleased to announce that England’s Environment Agency (EA) has successfully completed its first application of AGM’s harsh environment anti-corrosion product to one of its flood defence assets on the North East coast of England. The coastal flood defence gates in Skinningrove, Redcar and Cleveland, were coated with AGM’s new graphene enhanced Genable HC primer.

The coating system that was used in this project is a further iteration of AGM’s product offerings for barrier performance and anti-corrosion application. It represents the culmination of 18 months of in-depth testing and evaluation of anti-corrosion performance, for both salt-spray and immersion in harsh test regimes.

The Genable HC primer is a high-performance hybrid system based on graphene and aluminium chemistries to offer anti-corrosion protection for harsh environments, such as offshore and marine applications.

This first customer application on a coastal facility represents a major milestone in customer exploitation of AGM’s graphene-enhanced coatings systems for corrosion protection in harsh coastal environments. The coating of the EA’s asset is the first of several planned applications of the system.

After many years of product development and rigorous testing of example graphene formulations for a range of increasingly harsh corrosion environments, it is extremely gratifying to see the successful application of these coatings in harsh coastal and sea spray conditions. I am excited by the opportunity to engage with England’s Environment Agency and look forward to wider use of our products on further EA assets, as well as deeper engagement with them as an innovative solution provider.

Being based in the North East and seeing our products used locally is also testament to local innovation and the excellent platform of graphene R&D which AGM has developed in the region

Adrian Potts, Chief Executive Officer of AGM

The EA has set itself an ambitious target of being a Carbon Net Zero Organisation by 2030. We must innovate and engage with companies that are developing the materials and technologies of tomorrow, if we are to meet this ambition.  One area the EA is looking at, is how to lengthen the maintenance intervals on our Flood Risk Management (FRM) Assets, which will reduce our carbon footprint in maintenance activities.

We have welcomed the opportunity, to engage with AGM, who have supplied us with their new advanced graphene primer, that was used in December 2021 on one of our FRM Assets. The asset, comprising of two flood barrier gates, two sluice gates, and various auxiliary components, all within the harsh coastal environment where we have to carry out frequent maintenance, due to its location.  We have uniquely used this on half the FRM asset, with the other half in the standard offering we use, giving us a direct comparison which will give real world results in a relatively short period of time, due to its location.

We look forward to working with AGM, for further trials in 2022 of this interesting and innovative product, within a range of real world environments.

In collaboration with the French Corrosion Institute AGM has installed a series of steel panels coated in a range of graphene-enhanced paints as part of a long term environmental exposure testing programme.

When coatings are exposed outdoors, the effects of moisture, heat, and UV radiation can cause various components of the paint to degrade. All coatings that are expected to be used on outdoor surfaces should be tested in similar conditions to understand and confirm their performance over time.

The external exposure panel installation in Brest, France, will enable AGM products to be tested over the next 2 years in a challenging, real world tempered marine environment, in order to further validate the successful lab-based test results. The tests are all in line with ISO 8565 and EN 13521-19 standard with various exposure angles.

Monitoring variables such as anti-corrosion and barrier properties during and after exposure to harsh conditions will demonstrate the positive impact of AGM’s graphene additives on the performance of industrial paints and coatings.

Look out for updates on this installation going forward!

AGM launches its own range of graphene paints alongside another high-performance non-metal anti-corrosion additive.

Graphene enhances barrier and anti-corrosion coating performance, and we continue to demonstrate our commitment to innovation in this space with the introduction of two new product developments.

Graphene-enhanced Primers

Following outstanding results through extensive inhouse research and testing, AGM has launched a range of industrial anti-corrosion paint incorporating its own Genable graphene additives. The two epoxy-based primer systems represent an easy way for those considering the adoption of graphene to quickly test and evaluate its potential benefits.

Genable 3000 Series

Using a combination of graphene with traditional, sacrificial additives, the newly-formulated metal-free and VOC-free hybrid range maximises synergies across complimentary systems to offer the paints and coatings industry an unrivalled level of surface protection against corrosion.

Genable 3100 and Genable 3105 are optimised, formulation-ready dispersions that are easy to formulate, safe to incorporate and stabilised in a standard epoxy resin. The Genable 3120 offers a more sustainable option in an eco-friendly, bio-based epoxy resin to boost anti-corrosion performance whilst contributing to environmental goals.

Improved barrier and anti-corrosion performance with graphene-enhanced Paints and Coatings

The Genable Epoxy Primer is a hybrid product combining graphene with a zinc phosphate additive to enable the end-user to benefit from the synergies offered by both systems in standard applications, such as urban and industrial environments.

The Genable HC Primer is also a high-performance hybrid system, but this formulation is based on graphene and aluminium chemistries to offer anti-corrosion protection for harsh environments, such as offshore and marine applications.

Alongside the graphene-enhanced paints, AGM chemists have also introduced a range of non-metal, active anti-corrosion graphene additives to extend its Genable 3000 dispersion series.

Graphene additives for improved barrier and anti-corrosion performance of industrial paints and coatings

The new graphene additives are based on the Company’s well-established Genable technology, which is already proven to deliver significant performance uplifts such as chemical resistance, barrier and anti-corrosion properties.

We are pleased to be able to launch these new Genable products, which we anticipate will help further accelerate the adoption of graphene nanoplatelet technology in the industry. Our technology development programmes have focused on extensive testing and evaluation for a range of applications, and this experience is valuable to guide customers in the use of our products.

We’re pleased to announce the issuance of UK Patent No. GB2585648, covering the use of Graphene Nanoplatelets in water-based anti-corrosion protective coatings applications.

Graphene nanoplatelets have been shown to provide highly effective barrier properties, enhancing corrosion prevention in solvent-based paints through the use of high-performance dispersions. The introduction of Graphene nanoplatelets into water-based paints has been historically problematic due to the challenges in producing effective and stable dispersions for water-based systems. AGM’s range of water-based dispersions have now been demonstrated to enhance corrosion performance in such systems.

This technology development enables primer systems to achieve ISO 12944 category C3 or C4 corrosion rating performance where typical environments include urban and industrial atmospheres, moderate sulphur dioxide pollution, or coastal areas with low to moderate salinity.

“The global cost of corrosion is substantial and there is significant and growing pressure within the international coatings industry to reduce and ultimately remove the dependence on harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The move towards a water-based technology solution is a primary goal for many protective coatings innovators. Overcoming the challenge of dispersing graphene nanoplatelets into such coatings has been a significant area of development for AGM’s technical team, and I am pleased that this technology has resulted in patent coverage. This latest dispersed product technology offers the coatings industry a new tool in the formulation of water-based systems. It provides a further opportunity to narrow the gap in solvent and water-based coating performance by enabling the use of graphene nanoplatelet materials thereby supporting the move away from solvent-based products.”

Adrian Potts, CEO of AGM
